Pond Construction

The biggest part of this pond was accomplished over one weekend. This was the marking, digging, installing liner and filling. Most of the lanscaping was done also. The stone was purchased one afternoon and laid in a couple hours. The plants? You'll find thats a never ending cycle! We've been working on a photo album here of the pond.Upon gathering photos we ran across a couple that shows a good comparision of just how much a couple of years can make. The top part of the image shows the completed pond. The lower half shows the same pond from a similar perspective a couple years later.Take a look.Image size approx 100k.

The Hole,Part 1  The beginning of "The Hole".After selecting the site,I used an old piece of garden hose cut to the right length and pieced together to form the outline. After getting the grass removed,I used my garden tiller to loosen up the dirt for the first level.

The Hole,Part 2  Next,using small pieces of wood approx. 12" long,I lined the shelf area. This insured the shelf area remained relatively the same all the way around.

The hole,Part 3  Once the center portion was dug,I cleaned up the edges.Just about ready for the liner.

The Liner  The liners installed and its starting to fill.I used a Beckett liner and pump kit purchased from a local garden supply. The two hoses, one from my well and the other is county water. This made it quicker to fill.

The Stonework  Lining the pond with stone was a chore.I used approx. 900 lbs. of stone. It was enough to go around twice. With the stone in place,I then trimmed the excess liner off and used a shovel to push the remaining edges into the ground.

Almost Done!  The semi-finished product.I used lanscape timbers because the area wasn't completely level.Besides this meant I didn't have to haul all that dirt somewhere. The size of the pond is approx 8'X10'X24" deep.

New Pond June,1996  Plants are: 3 water lillies.A pink and a yellow, plus I've added a Spatterdock lily.We also have some Water Canna,Dwarf Bamboo,Sagittaria,Spider Lily,Lizards Tail and Florida Crypt. The border plants include: 3 types of ornamental grasses,Gardenia,Swamp Hibiscus and Japanese Holly.

Sept.1996  The plants had filled out pretty well in a couple of months.

Summer of 1997  Here's one of the Lily blooms. One of these days I'm going to catch all this stuff blooming at the same time!

Summer of 1998  The 98 summer show!
